In our increasingly interdisciplinary world, creative people may draw explicit lines between their inspiration and output. In our first issue devoted to fashion and art, we also explore their more nebulous spheres of influence. Take our cover subject Teresita Fernández. A 2005 MacArthur Fellow, the artist is best known for her attention-grabbing public sculpture. But she also has strong ties to the fashion world, and she has been tapped by Louis Vuitton to create site-specific installations at its stores in Shanghai, Paris and Miami. Documenting Fernández in the golden glow of her massive Madison Square Park installation Fata Morgana, seasoned photographer Matthu Placek was moved by both the power of her work and the energy she exudes in its presence. "I'm always trying to make physical sculptures that behave like cinematic dissolves," Fernández tells her friend, the architect David Adjaye, in our exclusive interview. Their conversation takes us on a fascinating journey across the many disciplines Fernández culls from. I am lucky enough to call fashion designer Victor Alfaro a friend. And a recent visit to his New York studio cast another light on the more discreet bridges between worlds. Alfaro has spent decades pursuing furniture by Jean Prouvé, Pierre Jeanneret and Wendell Castle, and in New York, that collection provides constant inspiration to his coveted garments. Alfaro would probably have lots to discuss with Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson, whom writer Mieke ten Have found to be a "frustrated decorator" in "Spanish Revival." In "The Alchemists," meanwhile, writer Samantha Tse courts the matchmakers behind some of the most dynamic collaborations in fashion and art today. And finally, we sit down with artist Aaron Young and fashion influencer Laure Heriard-Dubreuil, whose charming love affair ignited at Art Basel Miami Beach. Next month, we embark on a collaboration with our new partner NET-A-PORTER.COM called "In Conversation." This series of lectures will take place at the Rubell Family Collection, focusing on women artists among other compelling topics. Our first discussion kicks off in early May with video coverage featured on Culturedmag.com. Indeed, this latest series continues our quest to deliver content beyond the printed page: Our team has just returned from the Battery in San Francisco where Tali Jaffe moderated the first talk in a yearlong series co-hosted by The NWBLK Gallery. And, in Los Angeles, we co-hosted an elegant dinner party at Pierre Koenig's Case Study House #21—now home to the art and design gallery Seomi International. As that event proved, there is no greater feast for the senses than creative convergence. Sarah G.
