32 Oil Prophets Auburn University was one of six land-grant universities selected to be awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Alabama counties where adult obesity rates are greater than 40%. Our proposal entitled, "Engaging Communities to Reduce and Prevent Obesity in 14 High-obesity Alabama Counties" is a three-year community-based effort which involves; Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chambers, Coosa, Crenshaw, Cullman, Escambia, Greene, Lowndes, Macon, Pickens, Sumter, and Wilcox counties. The purpose of this project is to implement intervention strategies in the 14 counties to improve physical activity and nutrition, reduce obesity, and prevent and control diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. ALProHealth is the acronym for this three-year grant, and it stands for Alabama Preventing and Reducing Obesity: Helping to Engage Alabamians for Long-term Health. Many exciting plans will occur in the 14 counties during the next three years. Each County Extension Coordinator has formed a Community Coalition which will assess and implement CDC strategies that work toward increasing physical activity and improving nutritious food accessibility and availability. The Community Coalition will work with the community Convenience Store to implement strategies that support the overall plan of the community as it relates to improving accessibility and availability of nutritious food. Community Convenience Stores will have the opportunity to support " Strategy 2" of the grant: Implement evidence or practice- based strategies to increase consumption of healthy food and beverages as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The objective of this strategy is to build partnerships that lead to implementing strategies that increase access to and promote healthier food retail. Community Coalitions will be provided with strategies from the CDC to implement based on results from each of the community needs assessment. The ultimate goal is to prevent and reduce obesity in Alabama by system, policy and environmental shifts in our culture. You are invited to become a Champion store in the focused community. As a Champion store, you are eligible to receive information and financial support to assist you in making minor modifications to encourage your customers to increase their consumption of healthy food and beverages.
