P: (714) 677-1300 E: info@ddtechusa.com www.ddtechglobal.com "Market response is very positive and we now have enough history to confi rm both immediate and long-term value to the end-user." Several examples include the San Antonio International Airport, where the fi rst VMAG was installed in February 2007 and is now approaching 1 million complete gate cycles with only minor parts replacement and little maintenance, he added. "Incredibly, the electro-magnetic drive for this original installation and all VMAG operators is considered 'infi nite life' and replacement is not anticipated," said O'Connor. The number of VMAG operators in use at San Antonio Internation- al Airport has now grown to seven, noted Mark McCarthy, airport facilities manager. One is utilized in the maintenance compound area where equipment, trucks and fuel are stored, and the others provide ingress/ egress to the airport operations area (AOA). The unit installed at the mainte- nance compound area operates with a swipe card to enter and detector loop for free exit, while the others utilize a swipe card to enter and exit, per TSA requirements. McCarthy said he had been searching for years for a better, more suitable operator system for the airport, and when he learned about the VMAG he requested a demonstration. Shortly after, he authorized the fi rst installation. "The speed is a great feature, and TSA (Transportation Security Administration) loves it, but from time to time we have to tweak the speed a little," he said. "They actually can operate faster than some people can deal with; they wait too long and try to beat the gate." (As previously noted, the VMAG opening and closing rates are completely programmable.) McCarthy said that since the airport began using the VMAG operators, they have proven to be very reliable, and maintenance inputs are down dramatically. Dallas Love Field installed their fi rst "pilot" VMAG several years ago. Shortly after, VMAG was selected as the new standard for gate operators under their modernization program, and multiple units are now in service. Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (formerly Little Rock Airport) is tracking in a similar way and they are currently installing Independent testing certifi cation helps bring VMAG into mainstream continued from previous page additional units as technology and security standards are being updated, O'Connor said, adding that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security uses VMAG operators to enhance security and reliability at many Coast Guard stations across the nation. VMAG is part of the DOD UFC (Department of Defense – Unifi ed Facilities Criteria) for gate operators and is frequently specifi ed for major military bases requiring enhanced throughput and reliability for high volume access control points. A leading freight line compa- ny reports a return on their invest- ment in approximately 2 years when calculating time and fuel savings, he said. "Now, other freight companies are coming on board and installing VMAGs at their busy distribution terminals," O'Connor said. "Another industrial user credits VMAG speed for improving public safety and reducing liability by processing dangerous chemical tanker trucks into their facility more effi ciently. Many more examples across various market segments confi rm a legitimate need for a faster, more reliable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional operators and VMAG is providing solutions."
