DuPont grew up near Issaquah, Washington, and earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from Whitman College, in Walla Walla, Washington. After graduating in 2001, she spent several years working on farms in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and New York, and served two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia. She earned a master's degree in integrated pest man- agement from the University of California, Davis, in 2009 and has been an educator in sustainable agriculture at Penn State for the past six years. She has worked on pest management, soil health, and cover crops in vegetable and berry production and has worked with organic and beginner farmers. DuPont, 36, starts her new position in November. Broetje pays $2.25 million fine B roetje Orchards of Prescott, Washington, has agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine for failing to verify the eli- gibility of its employees to work in the United States. The case brought by the federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is one of the largest ever levied against an agricultural concern. "We are pleased to put this process behind us and to get back to the business of growing fruit," the company said in a news release in early June. "This case neverthe- less highlights what is clearly a dysfunctional and broken immigration system," the company said, and urged Congress to pass immigration reform.
