Celebrating our 31st year of publication • Be sure to visit us online at www.worldfencenews.com JULY 2015 Eagle Fence & Guardrail (EF&G), headquartered in Plainville, Conn. and a major player in the North- eastern U.S. fence market, recently completed installation of some 1,200 lineal feet of custom ornamental fenc- ing and gates on the roof of a parking garage at Hartford Hospital in Hart- ford, Conn. The fact that the job was located seven stories above the ground was just one of the factors that made it in- teresting. The scope of work included in- stallation of custom fabricated and color coated ornamental steel picket fence and a 10-foot wide double swing gate supplied by Iron World Manufac- turing (IW) of Laurel, Md. to match the garage façade, according to Steve Royer, director of architectural de- velopment and specifi cation for Iron World Manufacturing, who served as the company's liaison and main point of contact for the project. Also, multiple heights were re- quired to accommodate the building's structural supports while maintaining a constant level fence top, including custom building on-site about 150 lin- eal feet of fence that transitions from 11' high to over 20' high. Overall, the job involved a custom design; raw materials for posts and plates; on-site fabrication, and one- of-a-kind color coating. A crane was utilized to lift all materials to the top of the garage for installation. According to James Dineen III, VPO of Eagle Fence & Guardrail, the hospital had been adding chain link fence to the top fl oors of several park- ing garages over the last two years, as an added means to increase security. This particular garage was a new construction project in 2014, and the hospital planners had a greater vision for the facility. "Because of the newness of the structure and its amazing view of the downtown Hartford skyline, there was hope to someday use the rooftop for events and fundraisers," said Dineen. "As such, the hospital did not want to add a chain link fence, but rather a more attractive option. The basic design still needed to include a min- imum 9' tall vertical fence that re- turned about 2' back into the garage." After several meetings at the ga- rage, EF&G presented the option to install an ornamental steel picket fence. Hospital staff was also con- cerned about the fence looking like an extension of the building façade, which included multiple different col- ors and elevations. EF&G reached out to Iron World Manufacturing to dis- cuss various custom options regarding heights and colors. A formal propos- al was sent to the hospital, and it was approved. Dineen said the fi rst stage of the installation began in late De- cember 2014. EF&G had nearly 400 custom base plates made by a local vendor, and IW shipped 3" square galvanized posts. Installers spent sev- eral weeks laying out and mocking up each individual post/plate assembly, which in turn had to be coded by color and placement. The design included both side-mounted and surface-mount- ed plates, depending on the garage Eagle Fence & Guardrail completes a sky high fence job continued on page 17 Above left, due to the newness of the structure and its spectacular view of the downtown Hartford, Conn. skyline, Hartford Hospital staff had a vision of possibly using the parking garage rooftop for future special events and fundraisers, and therefore wanted a more attractive setting than provid- ed by the chain link enclosures used at the other garages. At left, local contractor Northeast Riggers, Inc. provided crane and rigging services to place the materials on top of the 125' tall garage. Below left, ornamen- tal steel panels had to be fabricated in multiple heights in order to allow the constant level fence top as or- dered by the customer. The panels and posts also required custom col- or coating in order to blend in like an extension of the building façade. The basic design called for a minimum 9' tall fence with 2' in-turn at the top. (Eagle Fence & Guardrail photos)
