Performance of security grade chain link fence documented in CLFMI publication Security and fence professionals need to know about the tested, proven performance of security grade chain link fence in deterring and delaying different threat levels. Now the data needed to make in- formed decisions is available, accord- ing to the Chain Link Fence Manufac- turers Institute. Using ASTM F2781 standards for both vehicular impact and forced-en- try penetration, the Southwest Re- search Institute in San Antonio, con- ducted testing to measure the delay and deterrence capabilities of security grade chain link fence and its perfor- mance against competing systems. Some of the fi ndings include: • Properly specifi ed and installed security grade chain link fence pro- vides superior resistance to both low and medium forced-entry threats and outperforms competing expanded metal panel fence systems. • Security grade chain link of- fers different products, mesh sizes and gauges for different threat levels, which (contrary to ongoing "myths" and as shown conclusively through these tests) cannot be unraveled to al- low effective forced entry. • Impact testing shows that appro- priately specifi ed and installed secu- rity grade chain link can be effective in absorbing vehicular impact and can serve as a safety barrier for parks, schools and other public places. • Security grade, small mesh chain link fence, designed to preclude toeholds and fi nger penetration, serves as an effective barrier to the passage of weapons, and provides good visibility for detecting breaching attempts.
