However, it rep- resents one of the most cost effective methods of maintaining and increas- ing your sales, he said. • Jim Hart was back on the "dog circuit" with a chain link job at a dog school in deepest Florida, requir- ing clever negotiations with man and beast. • When the inventor of the au- tomatic vertical swing gate died in 1980, his sons discontinued the busi- ness. Later, Frank and John Ries re- opened Lazy Gate Mfg. and deal with a competitive market. They were profi led in a feature story. • Most people consider a second job a burden of necessity. WFN talk- ed to one fencer last month who raised llamas on the side. He said the work is not only profi table, but a great source for fun and relaxation. • Recent changes in Canadian ex- port policies and new logging practic- es had increased the supply of Alas- kan yellow cedar available in the U.S. wood fence market. Some said its return was signifi - cant while others said "don't hold your breath." • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner talked about fencing on sloped grades and fi gured changes of direc- tion. Sales personnel take note: landing an account without fi guring the added labor and parts for grades and turns will eat into your profi ts. July 1990 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the July 1990 issue of World Fence News, 25 years ago this month. • The cover photo for July showed a picture of some warning barriers at a construction site made of PVC. The cover story detailed the IRS crackdown on independent contractor status and proper classifi cation. • The issue contained a special section on designing and installing polymer fence systems and a listing of manufacturers. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner discussed how to fi gure for concrete footings as part of his series on estimating line posts. • One fault of many family busi- ness owners is that they keep too many secrets about their operation which can hurt them down the road, said a top business consultant. • A shabby offi ce doesn't neces- sarily mean you run a shabby busi- ness, but just try making a prospective customer believe that. • Vehicle safety and theft preven- tion are good topics for a company safety meeting. An in-depth look at vehicle safe- ty was presented, based on the IFIA (now American Fence Association) Safety Resources Manual. • Jim Hart knows what it means to get to the bottom of a situation, but the latest situation was ridiculous. continued on page 80 EED SUMMER SOLAR SALES PROMOTION Find your Nice Summer Solar Packages at EED!
