NGWA's Water Well Journal Wins APEX Awards Water Well Journal received two 2015 APEX ® Award of Excellence awards. It won in the Most Improved category for its graphic and editorial redesign that debuted with the May 2014 issue and is in use today. WWJ Senior Editor Mike Price also won an Award of Excellence in the Writing Interviews & Personal Profiles category for a Q&A with John Hofer, executive direc- tor for the California Groundwater Association, in the October 2014 issue. The win for Price is his fifth in seven years. APEX Awards are sponsored by Communications Con- cepts Inc., a group which provides educational information for publishing and marketing professionals. The competition focuses on excellence in editorial content, graphic design, and overall business communications among for-profit and non-profit organizations. WWJ has been an APEX winner 13 consecutive years with 27 total awards, most in the groundwater industry. "I was thrilled to have Water Well Journal recognized in the Most Improved category because it was a true team ef- fort," says WWJ Editor Thad Plumley. "When we set out on the redesign, our goal was to create a publication our readers look forward to receiving because it makes them better at what they do every workday. I think we accomplished that." Videos Promote Groundwater Fields of Study, Careers NGWA is promoting two new videos spotlighting ground- water fields of study and careers to students. A two-minute video called "Groundwater is Cool" prima- rily targets secondary school students. The video highlights the critical importance of groundwater as a freshwater re- source for human use and the environment. It contains arrest- ing statistics, fast-paced graphics, and music. A five-minute video explores the benefits of groundwater careers in interviews with students, professors, and profes- sionals including NGWA Board Director Merritt Partridge, vice president of Partridge Well Drilling Co. "NGWA members have expressed concern about where the groundwater professionals of the future will come from. These videos are just a part of NGWA's efforts to draw the world's best and brightest students into groundwater careers of all kinds," says NGWA CEO Kevin McCray, CAE. In his remarks, Partridge addresses the satisfaction of providing water to people and why that is important. "Providing groundwater to people who need it is one of the greatest careers a person could have. When I install a new well, I know I've done something good for someone," Par- tridge says. "There are many places in the world where you just can't live without groundwater. When I drill a water well, I'm providing a lifeline to someone who needs it." Partridge also talked about the diverse skills required in well construction. "I'm a water well system professional and proud of it. I have to be a builder, an engineer, an inventor, and a problem solver. What could be more challenging and satisfying than that?" he says. NGWA encourages all water well construction professionals to link to the videos from their websites and social media, and share with high schools and colleges in their areas. New and Renewed NGWA Memberships in May Total Close to 1000 The National Ground Water Associa- tion added 168 new members in May. The total consisted of 102 scientists and engineers, 47 contractors, 11 students, 7 manufacturers, and 1 supplier. A total of 789 members renewed their membership as well.
