52 tobaccoasia Linear or rotary, take your pick The smoking machine market can be broadly di- vided into linear and rotary smoking machines, and multinational company Cerulean has a pres- ence in both. But its most popular model SM450 is a 20-channel linear unit. "This has proven over the past five years to be the most popular linear smok- ing machine on the market and is now more or less accepted as the global standard with 90% plus market," asserted sales and marketing director Paul Glenn. To satisfy customer needs, the SM450 is also available as 5- and 10-channel variants. "All our units – whether linear or rotary machines – are compliant with the requirements of ISO3308 and capable of smoking ISO, FTC, Canadian, and Massachusetts methods," Glenn added. Meanwhile, Borgwaldt's most popular unit for linear smoking needs is the LX20. "I believe it's most likely so successful because of its quick and simple setup before and during routine smoking regimens," said Schmidt. Another reason might be that the unit – part of the company's LX range – supports multiple smoking regimes simultane- ously, which makes it extremely flexible in its ap- plications. In vitro veritas In vitro testing, which effectively means toxicologi- cal testing on "live" bacterial or mammalian cell cultures as opposed to purely chemical, spectral or physical analysis of smoke components, is a growing trend worldwide on the background of increasing governmental restrictions or even out- right bans on live animal experiments. Several smoking machine manufacturers have picked up on this development. For instance, German company Vitrocell Systems GmbH markets its one-port VC1 and ten-port VC10 linear units particularly for in vitro use. "Various smoking parameters can be easily changed via the software menu. The linear motor drives ensure highest precision in the reproduc- tion of puff profiles in bell, square, and human Featured companies' most popular smoking machine models Borgwaldt KC GmbH Website: www.borgwaldt.com Model RM200A "This fully automated machine is designed to carry out routine smoking analysis in the most efficient manner using different smoking regimes." – Thomas Schmidt Model RM20H "Our semi-automated RM20H combines routine testing regimes with the flexibility to operate with different trapping systems." – Thomas Schmidt Model LX20 "The LX20 is our most popular machine for linear smoking needs, most likely because of its quick and simple set-up before and during routine smoking regimes." – Thomas Schmidt Burghart Tabaktechnik (Heinrich Burghart GmbH) Website: http://www.burghart.net/tabaktechnik/ Pentagon "The Pentagon is designed for routine analytical tasks.
