Safety Is Contagious Believe it or not, in some fields vet- eran workers still mock younger work- ers for following safety rules. There are firefighters who are leery to put on res- piratory protection until the last moment for fear they'll be viewed as weak. For reasons beyond my comprehen- sion, it became hip to be dangerous at some point in the past. I guess it showed confidence or fearlessness, but as I look at some of the old pictures, all I see is stupid. By being safe, it breaks the chain of events that lead to bad traditions. The simple actions of you behaving safely take away barriers to someone else being safe. In fact, if you are a safe per- son, you'll develop an expectation on the part of other workers that you'll be wearing your safety gear every time you walk onto a site. So it really takes just one person to break the chain, remove the stigma of working safely, and completely change the culture of a workplace. This is something no training, no enforcement, or no program can do. But you can do it. Simply put, we need you to be safe.
