WORLD FENCE NEWS • MARCH 2012 • 35 Konieczny, at Solutions in Metal. To start our design process, we made sev- eral full-scale mockups of the serpen- tine idea to see if the chain link would form smooth continuous curves. Once we had verified that our idea would work, I made a scale model of the en- tire 126 feet long by 8 feet tall fence. "We then drew the angles and radii for the structure on the computer. We used specific rules for the post an- gles and radii so that the chain link would stretch properly. These CAD files became the guide for cutting all the post angles and bending the radii for the support structure," Galston noted. The fence structure was fabricated in six sections, which were transported to the site and set in concrete. The chain link material was stretched on site and secured tightly with stainless steel band ties. AFA honors Encon Electronics president with Distinguished Service Award Encon Electronics president and CEO Betty Mullin received the presti- gious Distinguished Service Award from the American Fence Association (AFA) as the association recognized members who are setting the standard of excellence in the fence, security, deck and railing industry during its an- nual awards presentation at FENCETECH'12 in Miami Beach in late January. The chain link was fabricated in a custom purple color. Purple combines ground and sky, the excitement of red and the tranquility of blue, Galston said. At night, there are 14 special up- lights along the length of the fence, creating a dramatic effect. CLFMI is now accepting applica- tions for the 2012 Les Grube Memo- rial Design Award contest. The Award includes a uniquely-designed plaque and a cash award of $1,000, given to the designing architect and installing contractor on the project which makes the best and most unique use of chain link fence materials. Brad Howard, AFA 2012 awards chairman, outlined the key points that helped the committee determine Mullin as the Distinguished Service Award winner. "Betty Mullin has been a member of the AFA for over 25 years. She was and continues to be one of the few fe- male owners in the industry, although she prefers to humbly disregard this impressive milestone," said Howard.
