UK E-cigarette Added to Oxford Dictionary Just last year the word vape not only made it into the online edition of the venerable Oxford Dictionary as a legitimate verb, but was also declared as its international "Word of the Year 2014", since language research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors had revealed that use of the word "vape" in 2014 had more than doubled compared to 2013. Now, vapers are celebrating another victory as more popular terms make it into the dictionary for 2015. This year the noun e-cigarette was added. It is defined as a "cigarette-shaped device containing a nicotine-based liquid or other substance that is vaporized and inhaled, used to simulate the experience of smoking". The word's usage can be traced back to 2007. For almost as long as electronic cigarettes have been in existence, they have been known as e-cigarettes, or e-cigs. So it may have seemed a little ridiculous to some that 'vape' made it into the dictionary before the words used to describe the device itself. Nevertheless, in June e-cig and e-cigarette were two of the 500 words that made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Cuba Tobacco Trail as New Attraction Cuba's tourism ministry (Mintur) recently announced it will launch the Tobacco Trail (or Tobacco Route) in September, during this year's tourism and nature fair (Turnat) in westernmost Pinar del Rio province, home to the South American country' lush tobacco plantations. "We aim to show visitors all the steps involved in an enterprise that has distinguished this province for centuries," said Deborah Henriquez, Mintur's provincial delegate. The Tobacco Trail will begin in the town of Consolacion del Sur, the gateway to the province, and feature the verdant Vinales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the leaves used to roll Cuba's world-renowned Habanos are cultivated. Regional tobacco is prized as the world's finest, said Henriquez, who hopes the new route will help attract more tourists. "We have selected the plantations, the tobacco barns (where leaves are cured), the different facilities of the pre-pro- cessing phase, and the experienced producers," said Henriquez. While new tobacco sowing methods have been introduced in the region, many traditional farming techniques are still in use, including old-fashioned plows powered by oxen. Tourists will also visit factories where Cuba's premium hand-rolled cigars are individually made. The national industry produces some 140 million cigars each year. US JT Buys Logic Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) recently announced that the JT Group had completed the acquisition of Logic Technology Develop- ment LLC ("Logic"), one of the leading US e-cigarette brands. The acquisition was announced in the company's April 30, 2015 statement, "JT acquires Logic, the leading independent US e-cigarette company." The acquisition is expected to have a minor effect on the group's consolidated financial performance for the fiscal year 2015. Founded in 2010, Logic sells a full range of high quality rechargeable, ready-to-use and disposal e-cigarettes, including the Logic Pro tank system. The investment in Logic provides JT Group with a sizeable participation in the largest and fast-growing US e-cigarette market. Logic's well established presence in the US, in addition to the acquisition of E-Lites in the UK, further underpins the group's global ambitions to become the leader in emerging products.
