"The Hough Corps is always some- thing that has been near and dear to my heart," says Goodwin, who today serves as the youth ministries coordinator. "The kids need an outlet and something to do, and that place is more than just a community center; it's a home to a lot of the kids." Goodwin said the kids who grow up in the troubled Hough neighborhood face a lot of uncertainty and need something "constant" in their lives. "Things at home or school change every day, but that is a place of calm and consistency," he said. "I knew every time I went to the center there was going to be something there for me to do. ROBERT MITCHELL "That's what I'm trying to do, is make sure these kids have something consis- tent and that they're growing not only as Christians, but as people as well." Major Diana Capanna, the corps offi cer at Hough, says Goodwin has brought a "new vibrancy" to youth ministries. Each week, more than 30 teens who belong to the divisional arts program at- tend worship service. They also come to a weekly teen program and participate in Family Fun Night, which draws 75 to 225 kids every Monday. Goodwin recently organized a home- less awareness program. On a Saturday night, more than 40 young people dis- tributed blankets at homeless shelters in Cleveland and then slept outside them- selves across the street from the corps to get the full homelessness experience.
