Some states require annual price postings between suppliers and wholesalers, and wholesalers and retailers or postings when prices increase or decrease. Primary Source Laws - these laws are generally intended to require that the wholesaler and the licensed importer purchase beverages from the primary American source. The basic requirement of primary source law is that the seller be the first source—closest to the manufacturer—from whom the product can be secured by American wholesalers. Privatization (Control States) - the act of removing the control authority from the operation of retail stores by licensing private individuals to operate off-premise outlets. Full privatization would include the removal of the state control authority from the wholesale tier as well. Prohibition - enacted by the 18th Amendment in January 1920, it involved the completed prohibition of the sale and distribution of beverage alcohol in the United States. Also known as the Volstead Act. Proof - a measure of the amount of alcohol in beverage alcohol. Proof is twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Thus, 100 proof whiskey is 50 percent alcohol by volume. Proof Gallon - standard U.S. gallon of 231 cubic inches at 60oF containing 50 percent by volume of ethyl alcohol. Recyclable - minimizing waste generation by recovering and reprocessing usable products (i.e. plastic, metal, aluminum, paper. etc.) that might otherwise become waste. Many states require that plastic holding devices, cans and bottles are produced with materials that are recyclable. Repeal - enacted by the 21st Amendment in December 1933, it voided national Prohibition and permitted the sale and distribution of beverage alcohol in the United States. With the approval of Repeal, regulation of beverage alcohol sales and distribution once again became a power of the individual states. State Stamp - stamp required on crown closures or can bottoms of beverage alcohol for purpose of sale or resale of products in a particular state. State Store/County Store (Control States) - a retail outlet operated by the control agency and staffed by state or county employees.
