There's not much you can do about the weather, but you can always hope. There are things that can be done about oil prices that Washington has lacked the will to see through, but that might (or might not) change in November. And even though the current market structure seems resistant to signif- icant downward corrections in price, it's hard not to imagine that real supply and demand factors will force the correction at some point. We can all only hope. In between taking some needed time A off, it's also convention season in the industry. In this issue of the magazine, we feature a rundown on the AREE and OESP shows. They both look to provide attendees with a solid package of offerings and of course, we'll be there ourselves. If you see a Fuel Oil News editor walking the halls, please stop and say hello and give us any feedback you think we need to hear. Speaking of feedback, we certainly received some on "Living with Biofuels: A Special Focus on Alternative Fuels Quality," an article that ran in February from our long-time contributor George Lanthier. A letter to the editor on page 10 from Robert S. Cerio, Ocean State Energy Resources, offers a counter perspective. Of note was George's statement that B2 con- Moving into Spring MILD HEATING SEASON IS ALMOST over now—a season marked by the continuation of high oil prices. centrations are 8 percent less efficient that regular No. 2 heating oil. That is the case with B100, which is rare at the consumer end of the marketplace. When brought to his attention, George acknowledged that the math in question relative to bioheat energy content at less than 100 percent concentra- tions was inaccurate. However, he does contend that he has observed a comparable loss in efficiency with the product from some source. Please make sure to read Mr. Cerio's response for the rebuttal. The magazine and the industry in general have supported biofuels and the related regulatory and legislative activities. A biofuel company won one of our maga- zine's New Vendor Awards last year. That support for biofuels, while broad, is not universal throughout the industry though and we on occasion provide feed- back that is critical of the product. There can be issues with petroleum oil as well, even today, though there has been over 100 years of experience to get most of that sorted out. At the same time, we want to make sure the discussion is as even handed and accurate as possible. It's in all our best interests to make sure all of our bases are covered and assured with supplying and handling this product. In a similar note, we (along with a range of industry associations) have supported the reauthorization of the tax incentive on biodiesel/Bioheat® as being in the best interests of the heating oil industry. You can read an article on developments in that area on page 22.
