Kites Over Lynden combines fun, families and art KITES OVER LYNDEN, held Sunday, April 22, from noon-5 p.m., is just one of the special events held throughout the year at Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 W. Brown Deer Rd., River Hills. Kite-makers of all ages are invited to celebrate Earth Day with an afternoon of kite flying on the grounds (wind permitting). "Bring your own kite or join the drop-in workshop with our Summer Art Camp staff from noon until 4 p.m. We will be mak- ing and decorating simple, earth-friendly kites from recyclable materials," say organizers. Dogs are also welcome at the event. The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers a unique expe- rience of art in nature through its collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures sited across 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. The former home of Harry and Peg Bradley opened to the public in May 2010. The Lynden house and grounds were purchased by the Bradleys in 1927. They retained the Chicago landscape architects William Langford and Theodore Moreau to trans- form the flat farmland, with its small farmhouse and barn, into an English country garden. The lake and rustic bridge spanning the water were designed to match Harry Bradley's memories of the municipal grounds in Kansas City where he swam as a boy. In 1962, Peg Bradley—already an experienced art collector—began collecting the contemporary mon- umental sculptures that secured Lynden's interna- tional reputation. She collected actively until her death in 1978, often inviting artists to Lynden to site their works. Through May 13, hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and noon-5 p.m. Saturday & Sunday. Docent-led tours are available Sunday at 2:30 p.m., reservations required. Closed Thursday.
