CULTURED 283 The first works to be installed at the Chinati Foundation were Donald Judd's 15 untitled works in concrete, seen here, cast and assembled on site between 1980 and 1984. DONALD JUDD, UNTITLED WORK IN CONCRETE AT THE CHINATI FOUNDATION © JUDD FOUNDATION/LICENSED BY VAGA, NEW YORK, NY Every year hundreds of people gather in Marfa during the second weekend of October to celebrate The Chinati Foundation, a contemporary art museum established by Donald Judd. Situated in a former military base—consisting of 34 buildings on 340 acres—Chinati houses a collection of permanently installed, large-scale works by 12 artists. Since 1987, the museum has offered its collection for free viewing, and hosted special exhibitions, talks, musical performances and more over this long October weekend. The artist-in-residence program welcomes artists throughout the year to live at Chinati and work in one of a handful of studio buildings around town. In this visual essay, photographer Douglas Friedman captured the landscape during this year's Chinati Weekend. —jenny Moore Director, The Chinati Foundation
