This spirit was made using Eaton County rye to produce a spicy, buttery whiskey, the company says. Homegrown Rye Whiskey is 47% ABV and has a mash bill of 97% rye with 3% barley and caramel malted barley. It is aged in freshly charred white American oak barrels. The whiskey has hints of coffee on the nose, the company says, and tastes of caramel and malted barley with a rich fi nish. Detroit City Distillery makes small batch whiskey, gin and vodka using the local ingredients sourced directly from farms near the distillery and tasting room located in Detroit's famed Eastern Market. $50 (750-ml.) www.detroitcitydistillery.com THE BIG SMOOTH New from Don & Sons, The Big Smooth is a 2013 old vine zinfandel blend. The wine is sourced from the grape-growing appellations Lodi, Sonoma and Napa, and features a velvet purple label with fi shnet stocking detail and a leg lamp image. It was aged for 14 months in French, American and Hungarian oak. The wine features aromas of dried currant, plum, fi g, pepper and cinnamon, the com- pany says, followed by fl avors of black cherry, raspberry and hints of spice, coconut and vanilla from the oak aging. The blend breakdown is 76% zinfandel, 11% petite sirah, 8% merlot, 2% primi- tivo, 2% petit verdot and 1% cabernet sauvignon. The Big Smooth is 15.5% ABV, and launched in California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Illinois. Additional market expansion is expected in 2016. $17.99 (750-ml.) www.donandsons.com SPIRIT WORKS STRAIGHT WHEAT AND STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEYS Grain-to-glass craft spirits distiller Spirit Works Distillery has announced the release of their fi rst whiskeys. Both are available in California and select states. The grains for each whiskey are milled, mashed, fermented and distilled en- tirely on site at the distillery in Sonoma County. Each batch is aged for a minimum of two years in 53-gallon, charred, brand-new American White Oak barrels, the company says, then non-chill fi ltered. Spirit Works Straight Wheat Whiskey is made from 100% organic Red Winter Wheat, the company says. The Straight Rye Whiskey has notes of bright baked apple, coffee and sweet golden honeycomb, with a warm spice fi nish. Both are bottled at 45%. $65 each (750-ml.) www.spiritworksdistillery.com BOTA BOX NIGHTHAWK BLACK Bota Box Nighthawk Black is a Californian red blend of Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah. It's is available nationally in the 3-liter Bota Box format as an year-round item, and in the Bota Mini 500-ml. Tetra Pak format seasonally. Featuring eco-friendly packaging, Nighthawk Black is made from unbleached, post-consumer fi ber, and is 100 percent recyclable. Consumers can drink wine from Nighthawk Black for up to four weeks after opening. Bota Box takes its name from the traditional Spanish wine skin known as a bota used to carry wine for centuries. $22.99 (3-Liter), $5.99 (500-ml.) www.botabox.com WILD ROOT WG Brewing Company has launched Wild Root alcoholic root beer. Celebrat- ing the liquids roots in roots, it's a combination of herbs, roots and spices, the company says. Wild Root (5% ABV) is available in 12-ounce cans in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Missis- sippi, North Carolina, Arkansas, Florida and West Virginia. (six-pack) www.wgbrewing.com CAPE CLASSICS FRENCH LANGUEDOC WINES Cape Classics announces its fi rst foray into the Languedoc region with the addition of two new brands to its French portfolio: Mas Janeil and Domaine de La Réserve d'O. These wines were crafted by producers François Lurton and Marie Chauffray respectively. Lurton is the fi fth generation of his family to be in the wine business in Bordeaux, with roots dating back to 1897, while Chauffray is a leader in biodynamic winemaking processes, the company says, serving as president of the Languedoc appellation. With these additions, Cape Classics— known primarily for its import of South African wines—now has partnerships in four of the major grape growing regions in France, with over 50 labels between them all. $12.99-$34.99 (750-ml.) www.capeclassics.com
