To fully become a geospatially enabled enterprise, organizations need to develop simple-to-follow busi- ness procedures with the appropriate user tools for the task at hand. In addition, they need to maintain security for the data, specifying who can see them as well as which tools can be applied. Accurate and reliable information also is vital. To uphold accuracy and prevent a free-for-all editing situa- tion, organizations need to think in terms of a project's full lifecycle. This means transcending simple snap- shots of the current state. This is made possible with new solutions that enable the following: business workflows with highly configurable rules and a workflow engine. a user interface that matches user roles or spe- cific workflow steps. - ing, analysis and large-format true-scale plotting. - connected mobile editing. and form validation at update. A Changing World In terms of the big picture, the world is changing at a rapid pace, and geospatially enabled enterprises are going to be the backbone for managing this new frontier. From unprecedented severity of natural and man-made disasters to drastic population expansion, the world is rife with global uncertainties that need to be addressed swiftly and precisely. As we embrace this new global frontier, geospatial tech- nologies and solutions—especially in the form of mobile solutions—are clearly the foundation for addressing these issues, managing change and ensuring that we have a safe future for our planet. With the world continuing to be tumultuous, it's obvious that decision makers need to access new and relevant information through continual, accurate and timely updates to geospatial data. New innovations in mobile geospatial technolo- gies will enable any organization to meet these new demands head on. And, by becoming a geospatially enabled enterprise, all geospatial data will be action- able for better decision making, whether in the field or back at the core enterprise. Any organization—whether a government agency or utility company—needs to rely on better business processes to improve overall effectiveness. Whether responsible to shareholders or citizens, all organiza- tions must be accountable, reliable and singularly focused on efforts that show a return. Mobility/GPS Special Issue Geospatial data should be at the core of all busi- ness processes, with mobile GIS playing a major role in improving data accessibility. In the defense and intel- all intelligence is built and analyzed. The same philoso- phy can work for any organization willing to become a full-fledged geospatially enabled enterprise.
