4 International Distributors Association History General expansion and rebuilding following World War II saw a tremendous infl ux of heavy equipment machinery come on the market. Large manufacturers were so busy building new equipment they inadvertently created a new market, which we call the heavy equipment "aftermarket". Heavy equipment operators asked the questions, " Is there an alternative source to service my equipment, sell me parts and take an interest in my problems?" Independents sprang up to answer that with a resounding "yes" from Amsterdam to Zurich...the long way. Shortly thereafter I.D.A. was formed to help those "pioneers" exchange important information and tips on this exciting and profi table new market...the heavy equipment aftermarket. This new alliance of re-builders and parts suppliers at fi rst called their trade association the "Associated Independent Rebuilders and parts Suppliers." But as more and more manufacturers and importers saw the importance and growth of the aftermarket, the key words became DISTRIBUTION AND INDEPENDENT. In 1963 the Association incorporated those key words and became the "Associated Independent Distributors." In 1986 to more clearly emphasize the development of the aftermarket industry a change was made to "Independent Distributors Association." Today IDA encompasses manufacturers and distributors and new and used parts of the heavy construction industry in 52 countries. Representatives from around the world meet every October for an international heavy equipment parts convention and tradeshow. The amount of expertise and knowledge exchanged at the annual meeting is incalculable. Unlimited benefi ts are derived from personally knowing other industry independents. Together the member companies keep this organization strong and growing.
