Special architectural design elements incorporated are: • Open rafter tails • Fascia overlay • Under eave overlay • Gable brackets • Gable vents • Drip edges above windows and doors • Sloped window sills • Water table and belt course banding • 2 over 2 gridded windows • Gridless glass in exterior doors • Awning windows • Casement windows In addition to the aesthetically pleasing exte- riors, the cottages were also designed with ease of ownership in mind. Low maintenance ce- ment board siding was chosen for the exterior. A mix of beaded lap and board and batten adds to theOld Town flavor. All the decorative ex- terior details, including banding, overlays and brackets are also cement board. Energy savings throughout the life of the house is also a focus. Upgraded insulation and gas tank less water heaters are just the start. Energy star windows, doors, appliances and light fixtures are used throughout. Compact Florescent light bulbs complete the energy star features. Water con- servation is accom- plished with the use of low flow faucets, show- erheads, and toilets. The six cottages are part of the Town of Bluffton's Wharf Street redevelopment project. The goal of this project is to replace blighted structures within the historic district with af- fordable housing in close proximity to jobs, parks, churches and other community re- sources.
