few years ago, I visited James Turrell's Twilight Epiphany on Rice University's impressive Houston campus. The artist has been creating his signature Skyspaces since the 1970s, and the Rice structure is his 73rd immersive room in the series, which enhances the experience of viewing light during dusk or dawn. Thanks in part to that incredible experience, we jumped at the chance to shoot the National Medal of Arts winner at Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery in Los Angeles. Because Turrell has spent his entire career expanding art's boundaries, his work also seemed ideal to anchor our first issue dedicated to the next frontier of the creative landscape: the digital renaissance. The Internet's connective layers have become so thoroughly ingrained in our cultural existence that it could almost be taken for granted. In order to bring attention to this transformative platform, we check in with everyone from the ranking elite of the digital creative class to the young artists who are snapping at this new establishment's heels. We were particularly excited to be invited to the Menlo Park headquarters of Instagram to interview and shoot (with an iPhone 6) co-founder Mike Krieger, and challenged by fine art photographer Catherine Opie's declaration, "There are a billion images a day on Instagram. With social media, how do documentary and believability function now?" Meanwhile, in our digital section (which we released on Culturedmag.com a week before the magazine hit newsstands), we sought out young talents like Amalia Ulman, who in 2014 famously used Instagram as her medium for a selfie-centric performance piece, and Addie Wagenknecht, who pioneered painting with drones. And it's not just the visually driven who are making waves online—as Kimberly Drew, The Metropolitan Museum of Art's social media mave, has proven with her influential Tumblr, Black Contemporary Art, which has amassed a following of nearly 200,000, turning the blog into a digital art gallery. Whether you post 1,000 photos a day or rarely scroll through Facebook, our first issue of 2016 is designed to inspire conversation about the current state of cultural innovation. We believe in substantive dialogue, via whatever medium. Sarah G. Harrelson Editor-in-Chief @sarahgharrelson Follow us | @cultured_mag 78 CULTURED Welcome!
