It is one of the nation's most historic and revered national symbols. So it was with a great deal of pride that Calco Fence, based in nearby Livermore, Calif., participated in a project to help conserve and beautify the Battery East Bay Trail, which provides spec- tacular viewing of the bridge. But the Battery East Bay Trail segment in San Francisco's Presidio is not just for the viewing pleasure of tourists and locals. It is a key link in the overall 400-mile Bay Trail which connects the Golden Gate Promenade and Mason Street paths with multi-use walkways and a bicycle route on the west and east sides of the Golden Gate Bridge approach. The National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Con- servancy began improvements to the Battery East Bay Trail in 2008, and wrapped up the project with a dedica- tion ceremony last November. As part of this major project, during the Fall of 2015, Calco Fence, Inc. installed approximately 1,000 lineal feet of thimble eye anchor cable fence along the Battery East Bay Trail in the new Battery East Vista. The in- stallation took 13 days, with the only real challenge being the sand, rock and debris encountered when digging by the ocean, according to project manager Matthew Hill. Victor Miller was the foreman, and the crew consisted of Ernesto Cardenas and Joaquin Espinoza. Golden State Lumber of Stockton, Calif. supplied the 4x4 pressure treat- ed chamfered top wood posts, and the 3/8" steel cable, eye lags, thimbles and turnbuckles were sourced from Coordinated Wire & Rope of San Le- andro, Calif. "Anytime you combine the City of San Francisco, the national park and a historic monument to conserve and re- store a local area, it is amazing," said Hill. "We were privileged to beautify this trail with all involved." As additional background relating to the scope of the overall project, the National Park Service and the Gold- en Gate National Parks Conservancy began improvements to the Battery East Bay Trail in 2008, where formal alignments did not previously exist. Prior to this dedicated multi-use trail, cyclists and pedestrians had to travel along with the heavy traffic on Lin- coln Blvd., which had provided the only link to the Golden Gate Bridge. In 2012, and in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Park Service and Parks Conservancy completed an additional segment of dedicated bicycle/pedes- trian lanes as the trail passes by the Battery East parking lot. In 2014, the final segment of ded- icated bicycle/pedestrian lanes was constructed, along with the creation of the new Fort Point Overlook. In 2015, the park began the Battery East Vista and Trailhead Project. The new Battery East Vista fea- tures an accessible viewing area, seat- ing, trail maps and interpretation of historic Battery East. The Bay Trail was realigned to improve bike and pedestrian safety. The Battery East parking lot was re- designed to increase capacity and re- duce maintenance. This project was completed between July and Novem- ber 2015, with Calco being one of the last contractors on-site. The cable fence serves as an effective barrier, but presents a natural and unobtrusive look which blends in well with the Battery East Vista environment adjacent to San Francisco Bay.
