Fortin NEWS Coffee and Tea Exhibitors Make COTECA Europe's Top Marketplace COTECA 2016 the Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa Global Industry Expo is getting a tremendous response from around the globe, according to or- ganizers of the 4th edition of the biennial event. The leading players in the coffee, tea and co- coa industries already have booked exhibit space on the modern Hamburg Messe show floor for the Sept. 7-9 event. This year COTECA is jointly produced with the Kaffee Campus of the German Roasters Guild and continues its partnership with the German Coffee Association, the German Cocoa Trade Association, and the German Tea Association. Trade visitors will benefit from a strong supporting program with workshops, presen- tations, professional coffee cuppings, and unique opportunities to find out more about all aspects of coffee, from the art of roasting to barista certification, according to organizers Claudia Johannsen and Claudia Jeske. The last edition drew 3,000 visitors of which 52% were foreign exhibitors represent- ing 32 countries. An independent survey of attendees revealed 89% were able to get new business leads and 92% reached their most important targets. Hamburg is proud of its coffee heritage as Europe's centuries-old handling center for coffee, tea, and cocoa. The city's historic "Speicherstadt" coffee warehouse district is headquarters of many of the big players throughout the world. STiR Tea & Coffee International is the exclusive partner of COTECA. Names New President John L. Fortin is the new president of Probat Inc., the Probat Group of companies in the US. The German- based equipment manufacturer in February issued a release to announce the change in leadership. Last July the board of directors voted to appoint Fortin to replace former president Karl Schmidt, who has worked with Fortin during the past six months to insure a smooth transition. Schmidt, who was named president in 1989, will remain a member of the board. "We thank Karl Schmidt for his leadership and commitment to Probat, his dedicated service to the coffee industry, and we wish him the best for his future," said Wim Abbing, chairman of the board of directors and c.e.o. of Probat Group. Millennials Power US Espresso Growth Past-day consumption of gourmet coffee beverages has soared from 13% to 36% among 18-24 year olds and from 19% to 41% for those 25-39, according to the most recent National Coffee Drinking Trends study. "Daily consumption of espresso-based drinks has nearly tripled since 2008," according to the National Coffee Association (NCA). The NCA has surveyed US coffee drinkers annually since 1950. "The influx of younger consumers into the category is part of an even larger pattern. Daily coffee consumption among 18-24 year olds nearly doubled between 2000 and 2016, jumping from 25% to 48%, and among those 25-39 it rose by 18%, from 42% to 60%," said NCA president and c.e.o. Bill Murray. "As younger consumers enter the category in larger numbers, their tastes are supporting broader trends in consumer behavior," said Murray. The study also found that 29% of US consumers now own a single-cup brewer, a number that has quadrupled in the past 5 years. The 2016 edition of the NCDT features an interactive electronic platform providing custom reports with the specific information to make better business decisions. The member price is $425. Non-members pay $625 for a PDF and portal access.
