36 JUNE 2016 | FUEL OIL NEWS | www.fueloilnews.com HVAC/HYDRONICS NEWS ¦ EXISTING BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY FEATURED AT ASHRAE 2016 ANNUAL CONFERENCE Increasing the energy efficiency and reducing the energy con- sumption of existing buildings can have up to four times the environmental impact of installing renewable energy, according to ASHRAE. With existing building renovation accounting for most of the money spent in U.S. building construction today, actual building performance needs to be determined to make the most of those dollars spent, the organization said. Setting those metrics and increasing existing buildings' energy efficiency is the subject of a seminar at the ASHRAE 2016 Annual Conference. The Conference takes place June 25-29 at Marriott St. Louis Grand Hotel and America's Center Convention Complex. To register or for complete information, visit www.ashrae.org/stlouis. In 2015, ASHRAE and the Illuminating Engineering Society published ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 100, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings, which goes beyond energy efficiency mini- mums in that it requires energy management and operation and maintenance plans. "By requiring energy audits and providing for life cycle cost analysis of potential energy efficiency measures, the standard gives building owners the tools and opportunity for even higher performance," Gordon Holness, who helped write the standard, said. Holness is a speaker at a seminar at the Conference, Standard 100-2015 Overview and the Potential of Its High-Performance Existing Building Metrics, which takes place June 29. The standard sets specific energy targets based on building type, occupancy and climate zone with target tables established based on the top 25% performers within the U.S. Department of Energy's Commercial Building Energy Consumption data base. On an aggregate basis the standard is expected to reduce building energy use by approximately 30%. "The standard recognizes that U.S. annual investments in renovation of existing buildings account for around 86% of all money spent in building construction today," he said. The seminar is one of 108 sessions in the Technical Program, which is organized into eight tracks that will cover topics including: PRODUCTS current trends and technologies in the industry; professional development and residential systems; new design strategies for achieving net zero buildings; and high-energy efficiency and methods of design, including recent advances in alternative energy systems and equipment. The program features more than 400 speakers. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing sustainable technology for the built environment. U.S. BOILER COMPANY INTRODUCES NEW K2 FIRETUBE BOILER The K2 Firetube boiler is the newest addition to U.S. Boiler Company's K 2 h i g h - e f f i c i e n c y series. Joining the K2 Watertube boiler, the 95% AFUE K2 Firetube features a stainless steel vertical firetube heat exchanger and is avail- able in six sizes from 85-270 MBH. A combi version is also available (155 MBH). All models can be wall-hung and feature 5:1 modulation. The new, easily-installed boiler features an ergonomi- cally-angled touch screen display, which interfaces with the proven Sage2.2™ boiler control system and wireless outdoor rest, while offering "out of the box" high perfor- mance. Additional contractor-friendly features include a 3-in-1 vent connection, top or bottom supply/return/ gas connections, a split voltage junction box with fused connection boards, and a full-height side access panel. The boiler's dimpled, firetube heat exchanger provides lower pressure drop when compared to water-tube heat exchangers of similar capacity. The unit comes with a free three-year parts and limited labor warranty, with registration within 90 days of installation. As with the K2 Watertube, the K2 Firetube was developed in response to customer feedback. Installers preferring firetube designs now have a model designed with their input and prefer- ences in mind. In all, U.S. Boiler now offers stainless steel, condensing models from 80 to 800 MBH, with multiple heat exchanger options.
