REG also announced upgrades to the plant. REG leaders were joined by state and local business, govern- ment and community leaders in recognizing the transition to REG's ownership of the 20-million gallon per year nameplate capacity biodiesel refinery formerly owned by Sanimax Energy. "We are dedicated to producing cleaner, lower carbon intensity products and this celebration is another example of our commitment to environmental stewardship and energy security," said REG President and CEO Daniel Oh. "We are proud to be in the DeForest community and look forward to growing here." The event also served as a groundbreaking for approximately $7 million of additional investment into the biorefinery. The upgrades include process improvements, a dedicated entrance for the plant, additional biodiesel storage, and locker rooms. "These upgrades will allow the plant to run more efficiently and optimize our production and logistics capabilities," said Brad Albin, vice president, manufacturing. Principal contributor: Slade Johnson EIA: STRONG EL NIÑO HELPS REDUCE U.S. WINTER HEATING DEMAND AND FUEL PRICES Above-normal temperatures during the 2015-16 win- ter were a key factor in lowering heating demand and winter fuel expenditures. Compared with the 2014-15 winter, propane and heating oil demand decreased by 16% and 45%, respectively, and residential electricity demand decreased by 6%. The 2015-16 winter season (October through March) was 15% warmer than last winter, driven in part by one of the strongest El Niño events in decades. FUELS EIA NE WS
