4 JUNE 2016 | FUEL OIL NEWS | www.fueloilnews.com DATELINE BREAKING NEWS opportunity to put the interests of consum- ers first by putting aside politics over policy." ASHRAE CONGRATULATES SENATE ON PASSAGE OF ENERGY POLICY MODERNIZATION ACT ASHRAE expressed support for the passage on April 20 by the U.S. Senate of the Energy Policy Modernization Act, calling it "an important step toward making buildings in all sectors more energy efficient." The Senate passed the Act by a vote of 85 to 12. The bill contains numerous building energy code provisions that were supported by ASHRAE. "The passage of the Energy Policy Modernization Act demonstrates the power of persistent bipartisan leadership by many leaders throughout the Senate," ASHRAE President David Underwood said in a statement. "Each of these senators understands the need for reform and the dangers that lie ahead if we do not change. This accomplishment is shared by hundreds of stakeholders who have connected with members of Congress, helping them under- stand the complexities and likely impacts of legislation on the building and many other industries. ASHRAE congratulates the Senate on this accomplishment and stands ready to assist as leaders in both chambers work to produce a final bill that the President can sign, and which truly advances the arts and sciences of HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world." ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society for advancing sustainable technol- ogy for the built environment. CLEAN DIESEL DELIVERS CLEAN AIR BENEFITS TO THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION Government, environmental and private sector members of a Mid-Atlantic clean air coalition met May 4 in Pennsylvania to discuss strategies for continuing air quality improvements for the region. The Mid-Atlantic Diesel Collaborative is a partnership between leaders from federal and state agencies, regional EPA offices, environmental groups, trucking fleets, engine and equipment makers and other interest groups working together to reduce emissions from existing engines and equipment. The Mid-Atlantic C o l l a b o r a t i v e i n c l u d e s D e l a w a r e , Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Diesel Technology Forum Executive Director Allen Schaeffer spoke at the 10th anniversary meeting of the Mid- Atlantic Collaborative. Schaeffer said the Mid-Atlantic region is close to the national average for adoption of the newest technology clean diesel com- mercial trucks with near-zero emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxide—the latter a contributor to regional ozone levels. An additional 30,000 tons of NOx and almost one million tons of C02 could be elimi- nated if just half of the commercial vehicles in use in Pennsylvania met the model year 2010 diesel standard, he said. According to the Ozone Transport Commission, the region is projected to see a reduction of NOx emissions from the larg- est commercial trucks of about 64% by 2020 from 2007 levels, primarily from adoption of new technology clean diesel trucks. The Mid-Atlantic region relies nearly exclusively on diesel technology for truck- ing and freight rail operations up and down the busy Northeast corridor, including the Ports of Baltimore, Norfolk, Philadelphia and Wilmington. The region's agricultural and construction industries also rely on diesel engines and equipment.
