(Rod) Guest of Sarasota, Florida, founder and owner of Guest Well Drilling, passed away on April 6. He was 81. Guest, along with three other drillers and the Sarasota County Health Department, wrote the Sarasota County Drilling Ordinance that is still in place today. In the early 1970s Guest was the first to bring rotary drilling to Sarasota County. Guest Well Drilling special- ized in all facets of water well drilling in southwest Florida. The company was also a full-service pump company—servicing jet pumps to lineshaft turbines. Guest was active in the groundwater industry, serving on the Sarasota Well Drillers Advisory Board and the Well Drillers Advisory Committee for the Southwest Florida Water Management District. He was a member of the Florida Ground Water Association and served on its board of directors. He was also a member of the National Ground Water Association and regularly attended the Groundwater Expo and Annual Meeting. He supported education for the drilling community and would send his employees to training across the United States. Guest Well Drilling made national news in 1974 near Weeki Wachee, Florida. Guest's third rotary rig at the time—a brand-new SpeedStar 135 and water truck— were lost with the occurrence of what is recorded today as "Guest Sink." The equipment was never recovered and the sinkhole is one of Florida's largest ever recorded. Guest Well Drilling had been in the Water Well Journal on three different occasions over the years. Guest, a Ken- tucky native, used WWJ over his 45-year career to ensure his company's growth and stability. IN MEMORIAM J.R. (Rod) Guest
