36 • august 2016 • world fence news CLFMI updates two of its popular technical guides The Chain Link Fence Manufac- turers Institute (CLFMI) announced that it has updated two of its popu- lar technical guides: the Wind Load Guide and the Product Manual. The publications are available for download at the CLFMI web site, www.chainlinkinfo.org. CLFMI notes that the Wind Load Guide includes eight tables for the spacings of line posts exposed to wind speeds of 105 mph up to and including 170 mph. The tables are based on the appli- cable ASCE 7-10 wind load standards. The spacing values listed in the eight tables must be adjusted using appro- priate and selected coefficients to ac- count for the size of the fabric gauge and mesh size, wind exposure and the probability for the develop ment of ic- ing conditions at that location. The tables do not take into ac- count wind speeds exceeding 170 mph, which may occur in Category 5 hurricanes, tornadoes, at high eleva- tions, or as the result of explosions. Seven of the more commonly used fabric wire gauge sizes and sev- en of the most commonly used mesh sizes when used in any combination and acted upon by the several sets of wind pressures (not wind speed or ve- locity) offers the user choices in the selection and/or specifying line posts based on local wind conditions, eco- nomics, aesthetics and functionality of other design criteria established for a specific application. It should be noted that this guide is specifically designed for the use with chain link fence systems only and is not intended for use with other fence designs. The Product Manual provides chain link fence technical information for general knowledge, system design or the development of a commercial/ industrial/security chain link fence specification. Among other details, the Product Manual includes drawings of the four standard chain link fence designs, plus swing gate, cantilever slide gate and fitting/assembly details. CLFMI also publishes a Field In- spection Guide manual to aid field in- spectors of chain link projects in their task of assuring compliance to speci- fications. The Field Inspection Guide is pro- duced in conjunction with the CLFMI Product Manual, which references all current ASTM material specifications and test procedures applicable. Pay tribute to those who have passed in the pages of World Fence News It is never a pleasant task, but World Fence News is honored to re- member fence industry members who are no longer with us by publishing obituaries and memoria in its pages. Many of the obituaries tell interest- ing and often inspiring stories about the lives of the people who helped shape the modern day fencing indus- try, and/or helped create it. In addition to the obituaries pub- lished throughout the year, Dynamic Pipe & Tube makes possible the Fenc- er's Memoriam, a very nice tribute to fence industry members who have passed away. It is a formal listing of these in- dividuals presented in "memoriam" style. In the event of the loss of a loved one who was involved in the fence in- dustry, please feel free to submit com- plete obituary information which will be published in a timely manner. This information also will be used to compile the Fencer's Memori- am. Much obituary information is available online, and often World Fence News uses that to form the ba- sis of an obituary. But rarely do the online obituaries delve into the fencing career and in- volvement of the individual, and that is where as much supplemental infor- mation from the family and/or associ- ates is welcome. Submit obituary information to WFN managing editor Rick Hender- son at www.worldfencenews.com. Nice high quality photos are also requested. Again, it is not a happy duty, but one that we are proud to perform.
