This site has some 451 topics for your consideration, at no charge, and the topics have national application. They offer such topics as driving safe- ty, hand and portable power tools, welding, and cutting and brazing. This is a very diverse site and could prove useful for your research. Another web site that could prove helpful to you is found at www.lni. wa.gov/Safety/Topics/AtoZ/ToolBox- Talks/default.asp. It is posted by the Washington State Dept. of Labor and Industries, and contains at least a year's worth of safety topics. Of course, the Occupational Safe- ty and Health Administration hosts a very comprehesive site at www.osha. gov. Work your way through these sources, and of course you can per- form a Google search and continue from there if necessary. Earlier I mentioned that, in my view, one of the most important rea- sons for establishing a solid safety program was the potential savings regarding workers' comp insurance rates, as well as preventing human suffering. However, there are a couple of other pragmatic concerns as well. First, there is the matter of em- ployee downtime. Any injury that takes one of your installers or office personnel people out of commission can be a very ex- pensive proposition. The industry, as we all know, is very labor intensive, and as a result, injuries to personnel at any time can cause us to lose both time and dollars, sometimes significant amounts of both in our day-to-day operation. Many of you have shared with me, from time to time, just how difficult it is to get qualified help at any time, much less in an emergency situation. Enough said, right? There are a lot of reasons why safety talks are necessary in the work- place. I have provided a few so that you, as the owner or manager, might reflect on their importance and there- by establish the proper mindset to be- gin the task of building a meaningful safety program tailored to the needs of your people and your operation. Next month, we will discuss some specifics on how to run the toolbox safety talks and perhaps even offer some guidelines to help you create ef- fective programs. As you prepare yourself for said creation, keep in mind that this is just one more opportunity to help you real- ize that Profit Is Not A Dirty Word!™ World Fence News contributing editor Jim Lucci is president of Man- agement Motivational Associates of Freeport, N.Y., and for many years has written a monthly column on business management and issues which affect fence company owners and manag- ers. The award was created to high- light the versatility and functionality of chain link fencing products. CLFMI recognizes the designing architect and installing contractor of the project that is deemed to represent the most unique and practical way of incorporating chain link fencing materials. The architect and contrac- tor each receive a specially-designed plaque and a cash award of $2,500 given to the designing architect and $1,000 to the installing contractor. The award was established in 1984 during Grube's term as CLFMI president. He was instrumental in out- lining the award's qualifications and establishing connections with the ar- chitectural community to support the concept. Over the years the award has been given to projects as diverse as the "living" façade of an airport facility to the "Ghost House" made of chain link in New York's Randall's Island Park. For more information or to re- ceive an application form, contact Mark Levin at 301-596-2583 or via e-mail at info@chainlinkinfo.org.
