The company recently completed a project that has to rank high up on that list. Ornamental Tholl Fence designed, engineered and installed what amounts to a "mov- ing wall" at a very upscale private de- velopment called Martis Camp at Northstar, California, near Truckee. The community has a champi- onship golf course which winds through the mountains and forest just below Northstar. The centerpiece of the golf course is the clubhouse/lodge that stands on a huge rock outcropping overlooking the course. The difficult real estate on which the lodge is perched and the environmental requirements of the community make for tough logistics for the service entrance, loading dock and mechanical yard, said Steve Ap- pelbaum, sales manager at Tholl Fence. The design constraints resulted in these features being placed opposite the porte cochére (a portico-like pas- sageway leading to an interior court- yard) at the main entrance. "We had previously worked with 9390 Davis Ave. Howard County, MD 20723 2275 Bloomingdale Dr. Bristol, IN 46507 the owner, general contractor and ar- chitect on numerous other successful projects in this development, including the main entry and exit electric oper- ated gate systems, the golf cart main- tenance and storage facility and several other projects during the process of construction of the commu- nity," said Appelbaum. "Subsequently, we were contacted by the architect gate will open is the same length as the gate itself. • The gate will need to endure the typical Lake Tahoe climactic extremes, i.e., winter cold, snow loads, wind loads and blizzard conditions. The architects' question to Tholl The "moving wall" that Tholl Fence de- signed, built and installed at the lodge at Martis Camp had to be aesthetically pleasing and blend in with the "Old Lake Tahoe" theme of the surrounding buildings. At the same time it had to be able to stand up to harsh weather con- ditions found in the Lake Tahoe area. The gate opens into an interior area containing a loading dock and me- chanical yard. (Tholl Fence, Inc. photos) again when they recognized the chal- lenge of how to screen the service area from the main entrance to the lodge and secure it with an electric operated gate. As they termed it: 'We need to design a moving wall!'" The architect stated further ob- jectives: • The gate needs to match the de- sign and substance of the exterior of the lodge with an "Old Lake Tahoe" 2 Locations! look of cedar shingles, copper and wood trim. In other words, a really heavy gate! • The gate, due to its close prox- imity to the main entry, will be closed at all times and only opened to allow service vehicles in and out, so it must be safe and secured. • The gate needed to be 14' tall Fence was: "Now, what have you got?" With the task assigned to them, Appelbaum said they then began the process of designing the gate. "Based on a century of fence con- tracting in Reno, Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Northern Nevada, we have a lot of history on how to build successful gate installations in this region," he said. "One of our superintendents, Tom Webb, and I assembled a rough design and had it checked with the project en- gineer for structural integrity." Appelbaum noted that the gate and 16' wide and can only slide in one direction. The wall along which the www.ironworldfencing.com 1-888-487-3448 frame consists of 4" x 4" x .250 square steel, 4" x 2" x .250 rectangular steel and 2" x 2" x .250 square steel in var- ious configurations, including the main gate frame and a shorter box frame with angle braces. Both frames are equipped with heat-treated Elite Power WheelsTM continued on page 68 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Privacy Slide Gates ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Swing Gates ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
