ing chemical safety, was signed into law
by President Barack Obama in June.
Originally passed in 1976, the bill took
nearly 40 years for an updated version
to reach a President's desk.
The bipartisan legislation modernizes
regulations that deal with chemical han-
dling, including prioritizing the location
of chemicals to significant sources of
drinking water as a part of required
risk management assessments. It also
provides new authority to the EPA to
review and regulate chemicals, as well
as update its existing inventory of
chemicals.
The legislation modernizes important
protections for drinking water sources
and includes provisions to protect
groundwater in the event of a chemical
spill. Modernization could also lead to
additional investigation and remediation
efforts.
