(Bius is chair of the Educa- tion Committee.) In 2003, the American Fence As- sociation (AFA) formed the AFA Edu- cation Foundation (AFAEF), a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, to bring educational opportunities into reach for people in the fence industry. Scholarships are given to high- ly deserving candidates enrolled in a college or trade school. The candi- dates are either employed in the fence, deck, and railing industry or are the children of industry employees. In order to strengthen and expand the education fund, the Education Fund Committee has set a financial benchmark of $250,000, Bius said. "This benchmark is very signifi- cant, as it will open up the opportu- nity to apply for matching funds from corporate and private foundations, including the Gates Foundation and many others," he noted. "This has been a goal of the AFAEF since its in- ception, and is critical in allowing us to make a greater impact on the stu- Danielle Christiansen Alec Gamble Dennis (Beau) Kovach Mikala Schmitz Stephanie Garrett Renee Shelburne Tyler Cunningham 2015 AFA Education Fund scholarship recipients dents and families in our industry. "All donations are 100% deduct- ible due to the separate 501 (c)(3) Cor- poration IRS designation," he said. Scholarship recipients must have achieved a "B" grade point average or better in the previous three years of schooling and must have performed a minimum of 40 hours of community service. Recipients are chosen based solely on need and do not have to be AFA members to qualify.
