For those of you who don't have a safety program in place, regardless of your company's current safety sit- uation, a safety management strategy can help turn a program around, with conscientious effort. Certainly, a program needs to be customized and tailored for each in- dividual company and organization. A good design should start with an assessment of your company or or- ganization accident and safety his- tory, individual personnel, location, environment and working conditions, equipment, OSHA in your state or re- gion, as well as other safety regulatory agencies. While this sounds like a lot of work – and it is – it's well worth it when measured against OSHA viola- tions, higher workers' comp rates and injuries and down-time as a result of those injuries. These past two columns have tried to provide you with a window of opportunity into an area that hereto- fore might have disappeared with the downtime in the economy or perhaps the feeling that it wasn't "that import- ant." I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible review your current programs and upgrade them where needed or recognize the importance of establishing a meaningful one at this time.
