Hit all the hot spots. Mom gives zoo 'thumbs up' THE NEW writer of Key Milwaukee's online Family Fun is Liz Russell, mom to an infant son and toddler daughter. Here, she gives tips on visiting the Milwaukee County Zoo, 10001 West Blue Mound Rd. Find her updates every month at www.KeyMilwaukee.com. I love our award-wining zoo. I find it's a place where I can give my daughter, Adeline, some freedom to safely scamper about as she checks out all the sights. Many of the animals live outdoors, but there are quite a few indoor areas as well, should you need to escape a surprise rain shower or cool off from the sun. We've been to the zoo quite a few times and I never tire of seeing the "OMG! That's a Real! Live! Elephant!" expression on Addy's face as she sees the creatures from her books come to life in front of her. But what I really love about our zoo are all the bonus activities. There's a petting zoo, playground, rock climbing wall, carousel, train, education center, dozens of shaded picnic areas and more. And, through Sept. 3, visit the special exhibit Adventure Dinosaur.Dinosaur lovers will be in heaven, but this outdoor exhibit will entertain any child or adult. I headed there with my kids and found I was just as enthralled with the 20 plus life- size dinosaurs as my 2.5-year-old. You'll also find a sand pit where kids can dig for fossils and a large tent filled with every dinosaur-related goodie you can imagine. This is a spot in Milwaukee where I feel the entire family can exhale, enjoy the outdoors and burn off some energy. Details for parents: You can bring your own food and drinks with you, but there are cafes and carts selling food throughout the grounds. Clean, family-friendly bathrooms with diaper changing stations are easy to find. Gift shops sell clothing, toys, games, books, snacks and drinks. visitbrookfield.com Breakaway to Brookfield!
