play in your free time Art Throb Book Club I scream, you scream By Pete Lundberg On May 2, a new world record was achieved for the most expensive painting sold at auction when Norwegian painter Edvard Munch's "The Scream" brought in $120 million at Sotheby's. Surprisingly, this is one of four versions done by the art- ist, and the only one remaining in private hands. It was a pastel of the famous figure on the bridge, which begs the question, what would an oil have fetched? wegian history, "The Scream" has also become an icon of pop culture, garnering cameos in "The Simpsons," parodies of nearly every kind, and reproductions by artists like Andy Warhol and cartoonist Gary Larson. It is probably one of the most stolen works of art as well. The oil version that currently hangs in the Oslo National Museum was taken on the night of the opening of the 1994 Olympics. I talked to a fellow gallery owner about it and his response was, "When a top sports figure makes that in a five-year contact, the painting seems like a bargain!" Perhaps he is right. While the buyer was unknown at the time I wrote this column, we hope that the painting won't end up in one in- dividual's living room, but will be part of a public collection for all to enjoy.
