live at home A Backyard Paradise Summer is in full swing, and that means it's high time to capitalize on every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. For Kelly and Dan Cheramy of McFarland, that's as easy as stepping out their back door into a space they've transformed into a backyard oasis—complete with a pool, fi re pit and separate spaces for simply sitting back to relax. "We sit out here and adore it every day," admits Kelly. Together this creative couple crafted a space that serves as an everyday hangout for them and a special occasion destination for family and friends. A Colorful Landscape To transform a dreary shed into an idyllic addition, the couple looked to fresh landscaping options. Purple prunus and arbor vitae trees, along with numerous plants, treat the family to color throughout the seasons. An Open Environment With large families nearby and kids and grandkids to entertain, the couple is used to hosting the masses for days of fun in the sun. From swimming and poolside lounging to serving up snacks in the shade, they've created an enjoyable space for everyone. A Recycled and Handmade Setting Keen on recycling and reusing materials wherever they could, Kelly and Dan relied on a multitude of rocks removed from the pool excavation to add interest—even forming a "dry brook" of stone that cascades down their sloped yard. Separate Spaces Divided into three tiers, the backyard landscape offers functional space for all types of activities. A cedar deck is perfect for everyday dinners or family get-togethers; a pool, patio and fi re pit offer fun for day and night; and a lush promenade offers space for a stroll and a wooden swing for taking it all in. 20 BRAVA Magazine July 2012 Photos by Shanna Wolf
