Time for 2012 SMA Awards Nominations! The SMA Awards Committee is seeking nomi- nations for awards and honors that will be presented at our conference in Sacramento CA, November 11 – 13, 2012. Please nominate deserving individuals or organizations for one or more of the awards listed below. To nominate someone, go to www.urban-forestry. com/awards and fill in the short nomination form, or print the form and submit it below. Nominations are due Sept. 1, 2012. A list of past winners is also available on the website as a reference. Thanks in advance for your help! Award of Merit -- Focus is on advancing the Society's goals The Award of Merit, the highest honor the Society can bestow, recognizes outstanding meritorious services in advancing the principals, ideals, and practices of munic- ipal arboriculture and urban forestry and is presented to a member who has contributed substantially to the promotion of the Society's goals. Award of Achievement -- Focus is on service to the resource or the public The Award of Achievement is presented to a member who has clearly advanced the innovative use and/or maintenance of and commitment to shade trees and urban forests by local government and the public we serve. Honorary Life Membership -- Focus is on cumulative contributions to the Society over the years Honorary Life Membership shall be granted only to members of the Society who have contributed materially and substantially to the advancement of municipal arbo- riculture and urban forestry and have given unselfishly in their efforts to support and promote the objectives of the Society over an extended period of time. Honorary Membership -- Focus is on service of non-members Honorary Membership for a full year shall be limited to individuals who are not members of the Society to recognize those who have shown continued com- mitment and who have given outstanding service to advancing municipal arboriculture and urban forestry. Recipients will have shown substantive contributions either through research, field practice, promotion, inven- tion, or literature. 22 And Announcing the SMA's New Award ... Legacy Project of the Year Award -- Focus is on a specific project and results The Legacy Project of the Year Award is presented to an agency or organization that, through a unique and innovative project, program, or partnership, has raised public awareness and appreciation of shade trees and urban forests. The project must involve a Certified Municipal Specialist, demonstrate creative and effec- tive partnership between public, private, and/or non- profit sectors, engage neighborhood residents, and promote and implement best management practices, including but not limited to interdisciplinary coopera- tion, low maintenance design, and/or biodiversity con- siderations that enhance the long term sustainability of the urban forest.
