This area should be carefully thought out, researched as necessary, and include all parties concerned in the course of daily business operation. Another sensitive area that should be spelled out in your book is that of personnel recordkeeping. Many em- ployees are very sensitive about what records are being kept, what is being said, and who has access to these records, as you yourself should be. Further, are you going to give your employees open access to their records? Are there provisions for inac- curacies to be corrected? Make sure that you state in your personnel recordkeeping policies the extent of who has access to those files and why, and the procedures for cor- recting errors. If time cards are used in your busi- ness, ensure that the procedure for using cards and for correcting or changing them is spelled out. This area is designed to protect your employees as well as the busi- ness. Indeed, you will find that pro- tecting your business ultimately protects your employees, in all areas of your book. Another important area we will discuss in detail is personnel time, the working hours, by classification (i.e., office personnel, installers, part timers, sales force, management, etc.), payroll procedures, conditions for time away from the work force (such as vaca- tions, sick leave, personal time for such things as child or parent care or funerals, military service, jury duty, etc.) and any other condition that will concern the employee's employment as regards to the work day, both in and out of season. This section is particularly impor- tant, since it is where you will detail the length of the work day, the number of days in your week and your year, and will give the parameters that will help your employees plan their own schedules for the year based on your business' conditions as detailed in your book. It will also discuss holiday and va- cation time and eligibility and condi- tions, as well as pay procedures for full time as well as for part time or tempo- rary employees. The last item which we will dis- cuss in this month's column is devoted to the area known as benefits. In your book you must address and answer such questions as: • What benefits is your business planning to provide to employees? • Will health or life insurance be continued on page 50 Isn't It Time to Put the Strength of the Gorilla to Work for Your Business?
