56 | Overdrive | December 2016 CUSTOM RIGS 'Whiplash' proves to be head-turner T ravis Heard's "Whip- lash" 1996 Freightliner FLD is named for the medical condition he hopes to inspire in onlookers who see the cabover and its matching reefer trailer, used mostly for dry freight. Heard says Whiplash has a unique profi le among the majority of trucks traveling the roads he frequents. Last September at the Guilty by Association Truck Show in Joplin, Mo., Heard described one of many encounters with the Whiplash-af- fl icted: A woman at a fueling station asked to photograph the pristine custom unit Heard found in ragged- out condition in Oklahoma after a Craigslist search years ago. The woman wanted evidence for her hus- band, a truck enthusiast who she said just "wouldn't believe" it otherwise. The Heard family farms row crops and otherwise trucks. Travis serves as dispatcher, broker, driver and more for his family's Howells, Neb.-based company, which has a contract with livestock feed manufacturer Central Plains Milling. He runs himself most often for Heard Trucking in a 2006 Peterbilt 379. By Todd Dills "Whiplash," a 1996 Freightliner FLD cabover, runs occa- sionally in the Heard Trucking operation. Travis Heard's work on the cabover included re-dyeing the brown interior panels all black and repositioning the battery box to clean up the deck lines.
