Syracuse City Arborist and conference chair Steve Harris and the education and planning committee deserve accolades for providing such a high-quality conference in Indianapolis. Incoming SMA President Joe Benassini thanked Jeremy Barrick for his year of presidential service to the Society. RECOGNITION OF OUTGOING PRESIDENT Being the president of the SMA is not for the faint of heart. The devotion of our president is critical to our ongo- ing growth and success. Taking on the job of president is an undertaking that incumbents find exhausting at times, but also exhilarating and deeply rewarding. On behalf of all of our members, I'd like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Jeremy Barrick for everything he accomplished as SMA President. —Joe Benassini, incom - ing SMA President 34 City Trees Ward Peterson of the Davey Tree Expert Company and Dr. Rich Hauer (not pictured) of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point were honored with the Legacy Project of the Year Award for their publication, Municipal Tree Care and Management in the United States: A 2014 Urban & Community Forestry Census of Tree Activities. CONFERENCE COMMITTEE RECOGNITION Putting together a conference of this scope is a complex and time-consuming job. It takes a crowd of people and lots of hard work to make it look this good and this easy. LEGACY PROJECT OF THE YEAR This award recognizes a project that has raised awareness, enhanced management, or boosted appreciation of urban trees or green infrastructure via innovation, partnerships, and engagement. This year's winners are the authors of the recently published Municipal Tree Care and Management in the United States: A 2014 Urban & Community Forestry Census of Tree Activities. This is the fifth report over 40 years that addresses the many approaches communities take to managing public trees. The authors interviewed 667 communities that provided data for this project and have since done a series of publications, presentations, and webinars to disseminate the results. This report is a great contribution to the future of our profession! Please congratulate our Legacy Project winners for 2016, Ward Peterson and Dr. Rich Hauer. including serving as SMA President. She has represented the Society to many other professional organizations and has been the Society's designated alternate to the ISA Core of Representatives for a number of years. Please congratulate our 2016 Award of Merit winner, Rachel Barker. This year's conference was exceptional. In gratitude for their splendid work, the SMA recognized our education and conference planning team for all they did to make this such a productive and memorable event. Thank you to confer- ence chair Steve Harris and the rest of the committee!
