22 • JUNE 2017 • WORLD FENCE NEWS CLFMI now accepting applications for the 2017 Les Grube Memorial Design Award After recently naming the win- ning project for the Les Grube Memo- rial Design Award for 2016, the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) announced that applica- tions are now being accepted for the 2017 competition, which is named for CLFMI past president Les Grube. The 2016 award went to the archi- tect and contractor on the Main Street Bridge barrier project in Kansas City, Mo. and was featured on the cover of the World Fence News March 2017 edition. The award was created to high- light the versatility and functionality of chain link fencing products. CLFMI recognizes the designing architect and installing contractor of the project that is deemed to represent the most unique and practical way of incorporating chain link fencing ma- terials. The architect and contractor each receive a specially-designed plaque and a cash award of $2,500 given to the designing architect and $1,000 to the installing contractor. The award was established in 1984 during Grube's term as CLFMI president. He was instrumental in out- lining the award's qualifications and establishing connections with the ar- chitectural community to support the concept. The first award went to Pritzker Award-winning architect Frank Geh- ry for his design of the sign at San- ta Monica Place. Over the years the award has been given to projects as di- verse as the "living" façade of an air- port facility to the design of a "slam dancing" night club in Tijuana to the "Ghost House" made of chain link in New York's Randall's Island Park. Architects and contractors are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible to be considered for the 2017 Award. For more information or to re- ceive an application form, contact Mark Levin at 301-596-2583 or via e-mail at info@chainlinkinfo.org. To qualify for the Les Grube Me- morial Design Award, the nominated project must employ an innovative use of chain link fence materials (fabric, framework, and/or gates) on a com- mercial or industrial project; be con- ceived by a professional architectural or engineering firm; and be installed by a professional fence contractor. The architect and installing company of the renovated barrier on Kansas City's Main Street Bridge won the 2016 Les Grube Memorial Design Award for innovative use of chain link products. It was the latest in a long list of widely varied projects to receive the award.
