Call before you dig! continued from page 37 buried utilities worldwide that are vital to everyday living like water, electricity, and natural gas. 811 is the federally designated call before you dig number that helps homeowners and professionals alike to avoid dam- aging vital utilities. When you make the free call to 811 or contact them online a few days before you dig you'll help prevent un- intended consequences such as injury to you or a family, damage to property, utility services outages to a neighbor- hood, and potential fines and repairs. Now, this is nothing new; for years we have been discussing this topic and related "war stories" involving those who suffered the consequences of not calling. Those of us who have been in the industry for any length of time have, or should have, a protocol in place to officially set this in motion each and every time a contract is signed and before the installation date is estab- lished. For homeowners, the question comes up once in a while: do I need to call 811 if I am digging on my prop- erty? The answer is a resounding yes! Any type of digging requires a call. Whether building a deck, plant- ing a tree, installing a fence or a mail- box, 811 is the number you should call before you begin any project. The reason I bring this up at this point is so the contractors in your ed- ucation process can inform the home- owner of what he or she needs to do to prevent potential problems. Let's face it, we don't always get the contract. But it's important for us as professionals to educate the con- sumer and general public whenever we have the opportunity. The question often comes up is "when does the call get made?" and here is the following protocol as sug- gested by the CGA. Call 811 from anywhere in the country a required number of days prior to digging, and your call will be routed to your local one-call center. Tell the operator where you are planning to dig. Your affected local utility compa- nies will be notified about your intent to dig and will send locators to the dig site to mark the appropriate location of buried lines with flags or paint. Now what can be easier than that? All you have to understand for your business and for your educating the homeowner is to make sure that they as well as you always call 811 before you start any digging project. Calling 811 automatically routes you directly to the one-call center in your area within the United States. Interestingly, many states are set up to accept online requests. A state map found at www.call811.com pro- vides additional details on each 811 center as well as specific guidelines for your state. If your state accepts requests on- line from homeowners and contrac- tors, you will see a button for "Web Ticket Entry." Now we'll spend a minute on "okay, when can I begin digging my project?" Most locate crews will ar- rive to mark your dig site with paint or flags within a specified time frame after your call or online request and will make sure you know where to avoid digging so that you don't hit buried utilities. Remember, the depths of utility lines may vary and there may be mul- tiple utility lines in the same area. Be sure to check your state laws for spe- cific information. Alright, enough said on this. Hopefully this information will help save lives, and prevent property dam- age and fines. I hope those of you who do not yet utilize a specific procedure or protocol in your contract or installation process will now make sure you incorporate it as a routine procedure to be followed. I further hope in your effort to educate the homeowner that you em- phasize the importance of 811 and the protocol any chance your get. With that said, I can only further hope that your personal vigilance to this most important procedure will once again help you realize that Profit Is Not A Dirty Word™!
