Spreafico produces coffee packaging equipment for soluble coffee and single- serve capsules. Noted for its thoroughness during every stage of production of every machine, the Italian company has for 40 years perfected an open and innovative approach to the challenges of the current market. "A great part of this is due to its personnel: half of its staff, including engineers, technicians and sales representatives, is made of men and women under 30 years old," according to the company. Its most recent launches include three automated machines: a new cartoning machine, a two-lanes packaging machine for Nespresso-type capsules and a six-lanes packaging machine for Dolce gusto type capsules. Strong Brew Brewer Keurig in September launched the K-Select coffee maker to make a strong brew with a removable water reservoir and an intuitive interface to help coffee lovers brew the perfect cup every time. "We've heard that some of our users are seeking a stronger cup," writes Scott Moffitt, chief brand and beverage officer at Keurig. The K-Select coffee maker addresses that need by giving consumers the option to personalize their coffee even further," he said. A new "strong" button increases coffee strength and intensity. Consumers can select from four cup sizes of 6 oz., 8 oz., 10 oz., and 12 oz. Brew time is under a minute. The new single-cup machine features a 52 oz. water reservoir (sufficient to make five cups before refilling). The housing is made with fingerprint resistant materials, initially in two colors at launch with additional trend colors on the way. Energy-saving features include programmable auto-off and smart start that heats and brews in one simple process. It accommodates travel mugs up to 7.4 in. tall and holds a full accidental brew for easy cleanup. The brewer will retail for $129.99. Reusable coffee filters are sold separately. Scaerer was founded in 1892 as a maker of surgical instruments and sterilization equipment but broadened its offerings in 1924 with its first coffee machine. Dr. Volker Lixfeld, c.e.o. says "Schaerer stands for a pioneering spirit, passion, and Swiss coffee expertise. These attributes have defined Schaerer in the industry for decades now and played a significant role in shaping the WMF Group's business in professional coffee machines." Schaerer is keenly focused on its customers with subsidiaries in Germany, Belgium and the US as well as 100 partner companies on all five continents. Since 2006, Schaerer AG has been a key part of the WMF's professional coffee machine division. And since the takeover of the WMF itself at the end of 2016, Schaerer has been a subsidiary of the large French consortium Groupe SEB, where it is able to contribute its Swiss coffee expertise and engineering skills. Demand Rising for Specialty Paper Technavio market research picks up on yet another indicator of the tea industry's expanding search for premiumization: paper. The main drivers are health-consciousness among consumers and supplier moves to use higher quality ingredi- ents, extend shelf life freshness and improve quality control along the supply chain. Lightweight glassine paper offers a smooth and translucent appearance. It has "limited scope of contamination:" none of basic bag materials' potentially toxic leeching of dioxin, epichlorohydrin and plastic chemicals, or decomposition of PET – polyelephylene terephthalate. Glassine is superior in all areas: it looks good, is biodegrad- able, acid free, uncoated, and recyclable. Its porosity permits the use of larger leaf size than dust and fannings. This improves opportunities to provide flavor, aroma, brewing, and freshness. A secondary factor is self-adhesive labeling. New demands include QR bar coding, detailed ingredient information, "asset" labels which include data for quality control and supply chain management, and digital printing. Consumers want more customized information on the packaging. Providers need to add security protection against counterfeiting, up-to-date batch and production data, and near field communications, the wireless signal tag used by scanners in stores, shipping and inventory management. Better tea and better bags go together. You can easily see the difference in the bag, the packaging and the leaf.
