"Let's say you maybe had the furniture all pushed out and you used it in such a fashion that it was really open and airy," says Zander, "change it up and flank the sofa and two chairs next to a fireplace and really get a cozier affect." If your furniture is already comfy, Zander recommends pulling pieces apart and spacing them out, then adding a statement piece, like a coffee table, for guests to gather around. Rebirth a piece of furniture "A lot of times it's a matter of saying 'Oh, you know that chair that's in the bedroom could look great [in the living room] and I'll bring it downstairs,'" says Zander. Furniture can suddenly take on new life by simply moving it to a new location. By relocating furniture and incorporating a few accessories, like a great painting and a few lamps, you can create a completely new look without spending a dime. Repaint the walls Simply painting the walls a different color can make a huge difference in the space, says Zander, even when you keep all of your current furnishings the same. If you add green to a room that's been stuck in an off-white rut "all of a sudden the things you have just look different and that, a lot of times, is a quick, simple thing to do—and not expensive," Zander says.
