Wente Marks 100th Clonal Anniversary Ernest Wente, while attending the University at California at Davis in 1912, became interested in acquiring Chardonnay vines to plant in the Wente vineyard. He selected two sources for Pinot Chardonnay. One was the Gier vineyard in Pleasanton, producing wines primarily of Chardonnay under the then famous Giersburger label. The other source was the Montpellier Nursery in France. Wente ordered a number of varieties from the nursery, among them Pinot Chardonnay and Ugni Blanc. These two sources formed the basis of what we now call the "Wente" clone of Chardonnay. From these early plantings after the repeal of the Volstead Act in 1933, Herman and Ernest Wente released the nation's first varietally labeled Chardonnay, a 1936 vintage. Through the years, the company strived to upgrade each new planting, eventually creating top chardonnays as well as the famous Chardonnay clone also used by other vintners. 8 StateWays s www.stateways.com s November/December 2012 BEAM KILBEGGAN HALFWAY DAY
