PEI Honors Connie Dooley After 20 years of administrative service to PEI, where she is credited with being a driving force behind its success; Connie Dooley will be retiring in February 2013. She is also only the sec- ond person to be made a lifetime hon- orary member of the association (the first being Howard Upton). "Our organization has existed for a little over 60 years and she has been there for a third of it—20 years," said Bob Renkes, executive vice president and gen- eral counsel of the Petroleum Equipment Institute. "She came in six years after I took over for Howard Upton when we lost her predecessor, Sandy Parkinson, to cancer. So there you were with the relatively new executive director and we needed a good strong person to take care of all of the conventions, all of the staff, all of the financial matters and we got that with Connie. She almost tripled our net assets so we could do what we wanted and not be crippled by financial con- straints. She balanced every budget. She helped us achieve minimal staff turn- over and kept the organization stronger. She was responsible for some of our largest conventions when we were standalone, which occurred in the late 1990s, as tank regulations came to a close. And then afterward, as the industry started contracting, she was instrumental in the merger with NACS and with getting us through a convention three weeks after 9/11 occurred. Growing the tradeshow, keeping the staff stable, keeping PEI financially viable and stronger than ever before—I think that summarizes her big contributions and she was accessible and appreciated by staff and members."
