live at home Mastering the Bathroom The '80s don't seem so long ago, but when you're faced with a 30-year-old bathroom fi lled with dark wood and a massive (but rarely used) whirlpool tub, time seems to stand still. "[The homeowners] wanted an updated traditional look to go with the rest of the home," explains Al Curran, designer at Bella Domocile. In addition to an upgrade in style, they wanted to add storage space. With the help of Bella Domocile, GMK Architecture and Interior Logic Facil- ity Planning, they fi nally achieved the "bright and airy" master bath of their dreams in a style fi tting for their tastes today. Go Long The shower was designed to pull triple duty. GMK Architecture swapped the posi- tion of the shower and toilet so the stool is no longer the fi rst thing you see when you enter the space. The glass features capitalize on the natural light from the Light Bright Cabinets with a light fi nish make any space feel larger, while the lon- ger vanity and tall linen cabinets on each side solve the storage conun- drum. Though the cabinets couldn't reach to the ceiling because of the angle, the fi nished tops create an out-of-the-way display area. bathroom's single window. The designers also tried to minimize thresholds so the space will function for a lifetime. 22 Spa Inspired "It's amazing how many details are in one little bathroom," says Strobel. She helped the home- owners choose fi xtures such as the water tiles and rain shower head inspired by some of their favorite hotel and spa stays. The best part? They're all from Kohler and made in Wisconsin. BRAVA Magazine Tricky Angles The roofl ine was one aspect of the space the homeowners did not want to change, so Robin Strobel, president of Interior Logic, came up with a clever solution: Custom pendant lights hanging from the angled ceiling that create more space for a custom mirror.
