Retiring veteran fence man has seen and sold everything Ted Brown Sr. retired from K and K Fence, Inc. of Indianapolis on October 30, 2012, after selling resi- dential and commercial fence in cen- tral Indiana for the past 30 years. At a luncheon to mark his retire- ment, friends and acquaintances wished him well and assured him he would be missed after his many years of service. He has Debbie and Ted Brown lived in the In- dianapolis area his entire life and has watched the He received his Certified Fence Professional (CFP) designation in 1991 when he and his wife, Debbie, at- tended the IFIA convention in Boston with Kip and Penny Gootee. According to Ted Jr., his father has sold fence at prisons, jails, mine shafts, on top of the tallest building in Indi- anapolis, and in some of the worst of places. He has sold styles of fence nobody has ever even heard of – "just ask his installers and customers." Some of Ted Sr.'s notable clients have included NBA great Larry Bird, NFL running back Marshall Faulk, NASCAR and IndyCar driver John Andretti, Tony Stewart Racing, busi- nessmen Mel and Herb Simon who owned the Indiana Pacers and Tom Griswold of the Bob & Tom radio show. It is estimated that in Ted Sr.'s 30- year career, he sold over $30 mil- lion in installed fence. As you might imagine, having spent three decades in the fence busi- ness, Ted Sr. had some interesting things happen to him. Ted Jr. related a couple of inci- dents. "One of his funnier moments was Ted's colleagues at K and K Fence wish him a great retirement at a luncheon held in his honor. They even said it in cake form, below. Everywhere you go, all you hear is Ted saying 'I sold that fence….see that one, that's mine too.'" Ted Sr. went to Capitol City Fence Co. in 1982, when he was 34 years old. He was chasing an employment ad for an estimator position, and Capi- tol City Fence president Bob Gootee hired him on the spot. (Some might re- member that Bob served as president of the International Fence Industry As- sociation, now the American Fence Association.) Ted Sr. worked for Bob a total of 13 years until he sold Capitol City Fence Co. and retired in 1995. Ted Sr. worked three more years for Capitol City Fence before accept- ing a commercial sales position at K and K Fence, Inc. with Fred Poe and Terry Snyder in 1999. when he was measuring a residential job," said Ted Jr. "He pulled out his tape measure to get the height of the fence and when he bent over, he ripped one right in front of the customer. He stood up, looked at the lady and said 'excuse me.' "Another time he was measuring a job and was looking down at his wheel," said Ted Jr. "Just as he looked up, he ran into a clothesline pole and the end of the pole hit him in the fore- head. He came home from work with a perfect circle of a 2½" pipe impression dead center on his forehead. It was nothing major that required any stitches, but to see the scabs for the next couple of weeks was pretty enter- taining." Ted Sr. has been married to Deb- bie for 44 years. They have five adult children and nine grandchildren. He is a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. SureClose 57 for a hydraulic close, without the bulk and expense of an overhead closer.
