Walking through a fair at this level educates, intrigues and stimulates—depending on your vantage point—but what I like best is how Design Miami/ singularly captures a moment in time. The fair takes all of the best global ideas, world-class design, cerebral discussions and talked-about trends and naturally distills them into something definable for just a moment. For this issue of Cultured, we take a look at some of those very trends. Consider the increased interest in American design. We take an exclusive look at one collector's longstanding relationship with American design icon Wendell Castle through the eyes of George Lindemann, who has spent more than a decade amassing works by the American Craft Movement master. He invites us into his house in Miami, where collectible design is effortlessly integrated, and talks about his passion with new contributing writer Meghan Dailey. Other American designers who have captured our attention include David Wiseman (whose nature-inspired work speaks to another dominant theme of the fair) who, at only 31 years old, already has the attention of many collectors and curators. Vito Acconci—the first American to receive the prestigious Designer of the Year award—talks with Silvia Karman Cubiñá, chief curator at the Bass Museum. And, who could miss the inflatables defining the fair entrance created by Snarkitecture, the Brooklyn-based studio of artist Daniel Arsham and architect Alex Mustonen. In this issue, our biggest yet, we also explore themes such as the heavy inspiration found in nature, Art Deco and women pioneers in jewelry design. And we continue to look at the dialogue between fashion and art and design, celebrate new and established talent and chronicle the ever-expanding interest in design. So whatever your vantage point, we hope Cultured adds another dimension to your fair experience. And, please be sure to subsribe at culturedmag.com so you can stay informed in 2013. Sarah G.
